Kate and Alyssa clearly agree, so much so that they made sure all 3 were present at their wedding! Your wedding day should reflect you as people, and this gorgeous day certainly showed just how wonderful they were. Prepare yourself for some serious Hackney wedding inspiration… Getting Ready Getting ready Kate and Alyssa both got ready in separate suites at Town Hall Hotel (one of my favourite venues which I also recently blogged about as part of another Hackney wedding). Once she’d slipped on her sleek black suit from King and Allen (as well as her spotless Doc Martens) – and after a couple of rounds of Scrabble – Kate met her parents on the steps of the venue for hugs and kisses. Escorted by her bridesmaids, dressed in mismatched dove grey dresses, they made their way to the ceremony venue. (Here’s one of my favourite things about a Hackney wedding, and London weddings in general – strolling along the streets with your best mates, dressed to kill, and full of nervous excitement.) Alyssa opted for a long-sleeved, modern bohemian dress from the lovely Cara at Story Of My Dress. The botanical lace looked so beautiful when it was hung up in the window on the morning, with the light streaming through and highlighting the pattern; but, of course, this wasn’t a patch on how beautiful it looked on Alyssa. As they live in Australia, Alyssa’s family couldn’t make it over for the day, so Kate’s mum came to see in her dress once she was all ready to go. To have her family closeby, Alyssa carried a family heirloom alongside her warm-toned dried flower bouquet: a silk horseshoe made by her grandma, which both her mum and her aunt had carried on their wedding days. We took some portraits with her maid of honour on the steps, then it was time to get married! Getting married in a coffee shop It’s not every day you get to witness a wedding in a coffee shop: but then again, it’s not every day you find a coffee shop as beautiful as Hackney Coffee Company. Through the back you’ll find The Hackney, a tropical oasis in East London. As it was originally a brewery the space still has loads of original period features that give it an industrial feel, but the real star of this Hackney wedding venue is the foliage and grasses. Hanging artfully from the ceiling in bursts, they give it a cosy, intimate feel, whilst still remaining light and airy. Essentially, it’s perfect! Kate walked down the aisle arm-in-arm with her parents, whilst Alyssa walked down solo, and they met at the top with huge beaming smiles. (Alyssa’s parents looked on, proud as punch, from a video call on a laptop). Their ceremony was tender and emotional. They had mutliple readings from friends who are pastors, as well as a beautiful prayer circle with a reading from Ecclesiastes. After hymns, music and their vows, they were pronounced wife and wife, and walked back down the aisle to rapturous applause! Coffee and Crosstown donuts Name me a better pairing – I’ll wait. (Ok, bar Kate and Alyssa!) In place of cocktails and canapes, the newlyweds chose a tower of delicious Crosstown donuts, as well as cups of perfectly brewed coffee. As their guests mingled and took their seats on the comfy leather chairs of the coffee shop, flutes of champagne were offered around, and the speeches began. Kate and Alyssa both did speeches too, which I always love – more women doing speeches, please! Hackney wedding portraits (and confetti, of course) I always think of the confetti throw as a physical manifestation of your guests showering you with their love and best wishes, and Kate and Alyssa’s guests really went for it with the confetti throw, which resulted in joyous, colourful, radiant pictures. After group shots, I stole the newlyweds away for a few minutes to get some couples’ portraits. Of course, as it was a Hackney wedding there were plenty of super cool backdrops just a few minutes away: graffitied walls, shopfronts, and one of last remaining gasholders along the canal, an iconic part of East London history. The light was stunning, too, diffusing beautifully to light Kate and Alyssa up like the angels they are. (We went out a bit later too once darkness had settled in, and the streets were amazing in a totally different way – this time, they were bathed in the glow of neon signage. Both were equally stunning!) A Luminary Bakery cake and dancing the night away Where just a few hours earlier they’d said I do, The Hackney had transformed for the wedding dinner, with trestle tables laid out along the perimeter of the room. Guests found their places on the arched table plan, and took their seat to their name in a groovy, 70s-inspired font before enjoying a delicious dinner. How do you follow Crosstown donuts? With a Luminary Bakery cake, of course. Alyssa and Kate’s single-tier, crescent-adorned cake was the perfect fuel for the night of dancing they had ahead of them. Not only did the cake look amazing and taste divine, but Luminary Bakery helps empower disadvantaged women by teaching them how to become bakers and businesswomen, so it felt great, too. ]]> const searchread_67868e3e13ade60e746effaa = `2024 FILM ROUND UP A year of weddings on film January 13, 2025 Modern London Wedding Photography shot on film As I sit here at the beginning of 2025, reminiscing on another year of shooting weddings and capturing special moments for my couples, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. I think back to my first wedding, 15 years ago and I can't help wondering where those photos are. Are there prints stuck on the fridge door, prints framed and possibly faded on the living room wall. Is there an album on the book shelves, loved and cherished. I wonder what the polaroids look like, are they framed or are they being used as bookmarks in this month's reading pile. It seems like just yesterday I was a teenager, camera in hand, eager to learn and grow in this ever-evolving field and wondering if I would ever call myself a photographer. And now, with over 20 years of experience under my belt, I find myself still as passionate and inspired as ever. Film photography has been a part of my journey as a photographer for as long as I can remember. It was how I first fell in love with photography and how for many years, I have come to grips with the world and used it as a tool to document my life. There is something truly magical about shooting on film - the way it captures light and shadows, the depth and richness of the colours, the tangible memories it creates. There is magic in the imperfections, the light leeks and missed focused. One of the things that truly brought me joy last year was my increased focus on shooting film at weddings. It was a conscious decision, a return to my roots and a rediscovery of the beauty and artistry of analogue photography. I wanted to capture the unique moments of my couples' special day in a way that felt authentic and timeless. I wanted to harness the feelings of nostalgia that come from looking through old quality street tins filled with printed photographs, and create tangible memories that would last a lifetime. There is something so timeless and poignant about capturing these precious moments on film. It's a reminder of the power and magic of photography - the ability to freeze a moment in time and create tangible memories for my couples to cherish for years to come. In a world that is becoming increasingly fast-paced and digital, there is something truly special about the art of film photography. It's a slower, more intentional process that forces me to be present in the moment and truly connect with my subjects. And in a time where everything seems to be constantly changing and evolving, there is a comfort in the familiar feel of film and the beautiful, timeless quality it brings to my work. As I continue to grow and my photography evolves, I find myself drawn to the little moments more and more. The quiet glances, the stolen kisses, the heartfelt embraces. The way a couple looks at each other during their first dance, the tears of joy in a father's eyes as he walks his daughter down the aisle, the bursts of laughter and pure happiness shared between friends and family. It's these moments that truly make a wedding day special, and my goal is always to capture them in a creative and modern way that tells a story and evokes emotion and capturing them on film felt like a way of honouring and preserving them for generations to come. My approach to modern wedding photography became focused on these heartfelt moments, on telling a story through images that evoke emotion and connection. I found that shooting on film allowed me to slow down, to be more intentional and present in my work. It forced me to think carefully about each frame, to savour the process of creating something truly beautiful. I believe that modern wedding photography should be more than just a series of posed shots. It should be a reflection of the love and emotion shared on one of the most important days of a couple's life. It is my goal to create heartfelt wedding photography that tells a story and evokes powerful emotions. In my work, I strive to focus on the moments that may seem insignificant at first glance, but hold so much meaning and emotion. Whether it's the way a couple looks at each other on their wedding day, or the way a child's hand reaches out to grasp a parent's, these are the moments that tell a story and capture the essence of human connection. As I look towards my 2025 wedding season, I am excited to continue exploring the art of film photography, pushing myself to grow and evolve as an artist. Using film photography, to help me capture the little moments that make life so special, I hope to continue creating images that resonate with my couples and tell their stories. I am excited for all the weddings yet to come, all the moments waiting to be captured on film. I am grateful for the journey that has brought me to this point, and I am excited to see where it will take me next. As I went through a years worth of wedding galleries I was reminded of the joy and beautiful and delicate moments I got to witness. This year, I have had the privilege of capturing some of the most beautiful and intimate moments at my couples weddings. From stylish couples to full of personality celebrations, each wedding has been a true reflection of the love and connection between the couples and their favourite people and it has been a joy to document it all for my couples. Photographing weddings is not just about capturing moments, it's about telling a story. It's about capturing the little details, the emotions, and the love that surrounds us. Every click of my camera is a reminder of the beauty in bringing people together, of the joy and laughter that fills the air on a wedding day. This year has been a whirlwind of emotions and growth for me as a photographer. I have pushed myself to think outside the box, to capture moments that are unique and personal to each couple. I have delved into the world of my couples, focusing on the little moments that often go unnoticed but often hold so much meaning. One of the highlights of this year has been experimenting with more analogue photography at weddings. Having fallen in love with film photography 20 something years ago (now I am showing my age) I have always included an element of analogue photography in my packages but over the past few years I have included more and more film photographs in my couples final galleries, giving them some very special and unique. There is something raw and authentic about film that digital photography just can't replicate. The colours, the soft tones, the grainy textures of film photography is so tangible, adding a whole new dimension of love and emotion to my work. I am going to do a separate round up for my analogue images so you can get a real feel for why and my couples love it so much. As I look back on the year that has passed, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. I am grateful for the incredible couples who have trusted me to capture their special day. It takes a lot for couples to let their guard down and show the vulnerability that comes as part of a wedding. I am beyond grateful for the moments of connection and joy that I have witnessed and documented. And most of all, I am grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and to share my passion with others. 15 years of photographing weddings and I still pinch myself that I get to do this for a living and capture wonderful memories for my couples. I still feel the nerves before every wedding, the excitement when the music starts. I still cry at every wedding, get emotional at the speeches and love getting stuck in on the dance floor. As we head into the new year, I am excited to continue growing and evolving as a photographer. I am excited to push myself even further, to explore new techniques and styles, and to capture more beautiful and heartfelt moments. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey this year. It seems impossible, doesn't it? That's exactly how I feel when I think about Holly & David's Turner Contemporary Wedding. It was a day filled with so much emotion, style, and personality that I still don't have all the words to describe it. From the moment I saw Holly in her Solace London dress, I knew she was going to be a vision of beauty. And when her dad saw her for the first time, the pride and love in his eyes were palpable. It's moments like these, the ones filled with raw emotion and genuine connection, that make me fall in love with wedding photography all over again. The family dynamics at Holly & David's wedding were a joy to witness. From the way Holly fixed her dad's tie to the tight hugs with her brother, it was clear that family is everything to them. And the speeches, oh the speeches, they were filled with tears, laughter, and so much love. It was evident that their friends and family are their biggest supporters and cheerleaders. One of my favorite parts of any wedding is the confetti moment. The visual display of love as confetti rains down on a couple is simply magical. Holly & David had not one but two incredible confetti moments, each more beautiful than the last. The joy and excitement captured in those moments will forever be etched in my memory. The Turner Contemporary provided the perfect backdrop for Holly & David's wedding vision. With soft draping, elegant florals, and disco balls, the space was transformed into a stylish and sophisticated setting. Every detail was carefully curated to reflect the couple's love for each other and their unique sense of style. Music played a significant role in Holly & David's lives, so it was no surprise that they had their own club night, Hypnodiscs, DJ the first hour of their wedding. The dance floor was alive with energy and the party continued long into the night thanks to The Wedding Smashers. The joy and laughter on the dance floor was infectious, and I couldn't help but get lost in the moment. Holly & David's wedding was a true reflection of their love story - creative, modern, and filled with heart. It was an honour to document their special day and I can only hope that my images do justice to the incredible love that they share. This is just a selection of my favourite images from their wedding day...I am not going to apologise for how many photos there are as it was such a glorious day. As I arrived at the industrial venue full of character, I couldn't help but feel excited about the day ahead. The dry hire venue was transformed by Wild About You Weddings, setting the perfect scene for the celebrations. The day began with Mike enjoying a pint at the pub with his groomsmen, a moment of calm before the hustle and bustle of the day. Meanwhile, Rachael was getting ready at One Friendly Place with her parents and best friends. As she slipped into her stunning Halo & Wren Wedding dress, the room fell silent in awe of how gorgeous she looked in her dress. A Personal Wedding Ceremony The ceremony conducted by Rachael's friend was filled with love and warmth, highlighted by a sing along to 'all you need is love'. Everyone sang along and the room was filled with so much love. It was such a wonderful moment that really showed Rachael and Mike how much love and support they have around them. Dixon, their beloved dog, made a special appearance as the ring bearer, adding a touch of personal charm to the day. After the reception, Rachel and Mike took some time for their portraits. Despite any nerves they may have had, the couple effortlessly connected in front of the camera. The moments captured were filled with genuine emotion and connection, making for beautiful and heartfelt images. Dance floor at One Friendly Place The party kicked off with MK and the misters, getting everyone on the dance floor for an unforgettable celebration. The band’s energy was contagious, and soon everyone was dancing the night away. As I left the venue, the sounds of laughter and singing filled the air, a reminder of the joy and love that surrounded Rachel and Mike on their special day. It was a pleasure to document such a modern and heartfelt wedding, focusing on the little moments that made their day truly unforgettable. This is a selection of my favourite images from Rachael & Mike's wedding at One Friendly Place. 35mm Film Photography I learnt photography on film so it holds a very special place in my heart and because of that, I try to shoot film at every wedding. I love shooting film alongside digital. It's a little slice of imperfect magic that gives couples something very special and unique. This is just a small selection of black and white images from Rachael & Mike's wedding. The excitement and anticipation in the air were palpable as Jess got ready in the elegant hotel room, surrounded by her closest friends and family. As she slipped into her stunning Hermione de Paula wedding dress, I couldn't help but marvel at how perfectly it suited her. The intricate details and elegant design of the gown were a photographer's dream, and I knew I had to capture every moment as she prepared to walk down the aisle. Hackney Town Hall Wedding Ceremony There is no better place to get married than the glorious Hackney Town Hall. A grade II listed building, this venue boast period features and plenty of natural light. The ceremony at Hackney Town Hall was intimate and heartfelt, with Jess and Mike exchanging vows that brought tears to the eyes of everyone in attendance. The love and joy radiating from the newlyweds was infectious, and I made sure to capture every smile, every tear, and every loving glance shared between them. The Roost Wedding Reception The reception at The Roost was a sight to behold, with Harriet Parry's incredible florals filling the space with the most beautiful scent of flowers. The bright colors and unique arrangements added a touch of whimsy and personality to the venue, creating the perfect backdrop for Jess and Mike's celebration. And let's not forget the epic wedding cake by Isobel Bakes - not only was it a work of art, but it was also one of the most delicious cakes I've ever tasted. I couldn't resist sneaking a slice myself before getting back to capturing the unforgettable moments of the evening. As the night went on, the dance floor filled with indie classics that had Jess and Mike dancing the night away. The laughter, the joy, and the love shared on the dance floor were a true testament to the couple's happiness and the bonds that tied them together. Being able to document Jess and Mike's East London wedding was an absolute honor and a joy. Their modern, heartfelt celebration was a true reflection of their love story, and I couldn't have been more grateful to be a part of it. The love and warmth shared between the couple seemed to melt away the frost, creating a cocoon of joy and tenderness. As a photographer, it was a privilege to capture the small, fleeting moments that made their wedding day so special. From the way Jake looked at Amy with eyes full of adoration, to the gentle touch of their hands as they danced together at the reception, each image tells a story of love, laughter, and connection. The decor, crafted by Studio Lupine, was a work of art in itself. Every detail, from the delicate floral arrangements to the flickering candlelight, added to the ambiance of romance and sophistication. The Mark Kavuma trio provided the soundtrack to the reception, their music weaving through the air like a thread of pure emotion. So many guests would just stop and listen to the beautiful music. The sharing platters provided a communal dining experience, bringing everyone together in a spirit of camaraderie and celebration. The evening was filled with laughter, conversation, and the clinking of champagne glasses, creating a sense of togetherness that resonated through each photograph. Amy and Jake's timeless style was evident in every aspect of their wedding day. Amy's vintage Vera Wang gown exuded elegance and grace, while Jake's vintage Armani suit was a perfect complement. Their simplicity and sophistication shone through, creating a sense of authenticity and personal connection that was truly touching. When we talk of destination wedding photography, we often think of hot, sunny locations, or wild, elemental spaces. However, destination wedding photography doesn’t have to be either of those: it can be anywhere that holds a special place in your heart. For Tom and Susanne this was Sweden, and in particular Axatorpsgården, a beautiful farmhouse nestled in the equally stunning Trelleborg.

I was totally honoured when Tom and Susanne (known together as Tomsie) asked me to do their destination wedding photography.  I still get emotional when I think about this wedding, so many wonderful moments that made my heart fit to burst. Weddings like this are something truly special and Tomsie are just the greatest couple. This was one very unforgettable wedding. 

Their wedding day was a smörgåsbord (see what I did there) of thoughtful details, alternative wedding inspiration and incredible style, so I’m thrilled to be able to share it with you.

I mean, when you arrive at a wedding with a sign reading “Eyes up, phones down, hearts open”, you know it’s going to be a good day…
Homely, heartfelt wedding decor
Just like every other element of their wedding day, Tomsie had put loads of love and care into the dinner decor as well. The table was set with lots of mismatched pastel-coloured taper candles, set in different holders (they got a lot of their decor from H&M home, Granit, Lagerhus, Indiska, and IKEA. If it ain’t broke…) as well as bud vases of beautiful flowers that also featured in Susanne’s bouquet. The super talented Florista also created a flower burst to hang above the tables.

When guests walked into the space, they were greeted with the luscious table plan, painted onto plant pots overflowing with greenery. Each table was named after a classic and beloved Swedish sweet treat – semla, a sweet roll, kanelbullar, a cinnamon bun, and vaniljhjärtan, vanilla hearts filled with cream and sprinkled with sugar (another reason why I love destination wedding photography…pastries.) Dotted around, Tomsie placed signs letting guests know that the wooden board their decadent starters were served on were their gifts to take away at the end of the night.

And the signage didn’t stop on the tables. The decor around the room was heartfelt and homely, with fringed banners reading “Married AF” and “Best Day Ever”. Their Save The Dates had also been fabric, designed by Susanne and screenprinted by Malmö Printing Co. Of course, they also had to have a neon sign reading “Tomsie” too!

Sequins and feathers
First things first: Tomsie killed their wedding looks, wearing outfits that perfectly reflected them. Susanne’s stunning dress was Rolling in Roses, featuring sheer billowing sleeves that showed off the stunning botanical tattoos on her arm. She wore Stella McCartney sandals (paying homage to Swedish clogs) and Rogue Matilda boots later on.

Her accessories were a mixture of family heirlooms – her earrings were made from pearls that her Granny had left her granddaughters – and statement pieces, like the sequin jacket she slipped on later for sunset portraits. The feathered Agnes Hart headpiece of dreams gave Susanne a contemporary celestial vibe all day, and the Eden B hairpins in her bun at the back were the perfect finishing touch. Tom chose a 3-piece forest green suit from Edit suits, and wore Grenson boots to complete the look.

Outdoor ceremony and confetti
Thanks to the gorgeous weather, a lot of Tomsie’s wedding took place outside on the lawn. At the top of the aisle – which the bride and groom walked down together, accompanied by their furry flower girl – stood two beautiful, asymmetrical floral pillars, as well as a wicker sofa for the couple to sit on. Behind the seat was a tall white balloon, reading LOVE.

After the wonderfully personalised ceremony, it was time for the confetti throw number 1 (Whether you’ve booked me for modern wedding photography in the UK or destination wedding photography – you know I’m always up for confetti, so the fact that Tomsie had multiple confetti moments made me very happy!). Then, it was time for portraits with the families, as well as stealing a moment so that Tomsie could have some time just with each other.

Cake cutting during the speeches
Another thing I love about destination wedding photography is getting to see the different customs and traditions from cultures and countries around the world.

For example, when I asked Tomsie who was doing speeches, they said “Oh god who knows?!”. In Sweden, speeches are less regimented, and more open to the floor, as it were. Niklas, their Master of Ceremonies, had it all perfectly planned, and there were so many beautiful words shared.

Another thing I loved about the speech section of the day was that Tomsie used it to cut the cake too. They emerged from the farmhouse brandishing bottles of champagne with sparklers in the top, before pouring it into the champagne coupe tower. Then, it was time to cut the cakes, four beautiful kitsch buttercream creations made by none other than Susanne herself!

More confetti
What do we want? Confetti. When do we want it? ALL THE TIME!

Tomsie’s first dance was nothing short of perfect. In the courtyard, they danced to Tom Odell’s Grow Old With Me in the glow of the evening sun, surrounded by all of their loved ones. At the point where the song really kicks in, their guests let off confetti cannons, showering them with a physical manifestation of their love and joy.
